Living Healthy in NYC

It’s hard to stay healthy living in this city because we are always on the go, and are always looking for a shortcut for everything in our lives.  Fast food makes our lives so much more easier because it is convenient and it is there for people who don’t have the time to make a meal. I don’t know about you but working a 9 hour day takes a toll on me, and I find it hard to stay active. There are some really cool events taking place in NYC that promote health and wellness, check them out:

NYCRUNSFirecracker 5K - Governor's Island
July 4th @ 9am Governor's Island
Enjoy this rare chance to run on Governor’s Island and celebrate the 4th of July! The NYCRUNS Firecracker 5K offers unrivaled views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Statue of Liberty, starts off with a ferry ride and features a great post-race party. Afterwards, stay and enjoy all the island has to offer. Cost: $50 Online registration will close on 7/3 at noon. NYCRUNS members receive a 5% discount, race deferral rights, and other perks. Race day registration will NOT be available for this race.

Shape Up NYC - Shape Up NYC is a FREE program. You do not need to be a member of a recreation center in order to attend a class, though you must bring a lock for classes held at recreation centers. Shaping Up has never been this easy! Shape Up NYC offers free fitness classes every week at dozens of locations across the five boroughs. Shape Up NYC classes are taught by expert fitness instructors who know how to make fitness fun. Class offerings are varied and include aerobics, yoga, pilates and zumba.
Click the link to find out where are locations near you!

Learn to Swim- Learning how to swim improves your health and fitness, keeps you safe in and around the water and prevents drowning. To help teach New Yorkers to swim, Parks is offering free swimming lessons for people of all ages at our outdoor pools this summer. Check the site for locations in your borough.

Classes are divided into sessions:
Session II: July 23 through August 7
Session III: August 11 through August 22.
Registration for all Learn to Swim and water aerobics classes will be held through an online lottery. Lottery registration will begin at noon on Monday, July 14 for Session II, and noon on Monday, August 4 for Session III.

Different Ways to Stay Fit and Healthy

Summer is already here but it’s never too late to try different things to stay fit and healthy. After many searches for a reasonable pedometer I found Argus (Free, available for IPhones and Android). This app not only counts your steps but it allows you to add your weight in order to see how many calories you are burning.

Fitnessblender is a website that provides free full workout and healthy recipes. It allows you to search for a specific type of workout, difficulty, body focus, workout time, equipment needed. No only it has cardio videos but it Barre, Pilates, Yoga and more. One of my favorite videos is the Easy Warm Up Cardio Workout, the duration is less than 6 minutes and you can burn up to 42 calories

Would you be trying one of these this weekend? If so, let us know!

Let's Stretch Together

Yoga is a discipline that can be a bit expensive. However, in this great city you can find classes free of charge. With that in mind, Yoga in Bryant Park is back again for an 11th season. These classes are free of charge and are taught by professionals from Yogaworks (which is my studio). Click here to see the schedule and reserve here.

If you are a bit shy, I would recommend taking classes at Lululemon. They offer several classes throughout the week in different locations in the city. Click here to see the schedule for a location near you. They do offer a mat and props if you need it but you can bring your mat.

Will you be doing some yoga this week?
